Travel Bags Back In Vogue

Having just returned from a road trip that took me down the east coast of the US, I’ve never been happier to be home as we drove through a hurricane and I just missed Hurricane Helene. But as I look back on my time on the driving from DC to Charleston and all the wonders of the American open road, I sure am glad that 2024 has seen the resurgence of the oversized bag.

Even if I hadn’t just been on a trip that required a bag with lots of room,let’s face it, we’ve all had those moments when we’re dashing from the office to a gig or party, desperately wishing we had room for just one more item in our handbag. Well, fret no more! The fashion gods have answered our prayers, and roomy travel bags are back in vogue.

The oversized bag could easily be passed off as an over-casual approach to accessories, but this year luxury brands have made oversize look chic and ready to wear for evening attire as well.  In particular, the extra large leather handbag by Prada fits the bill.

Off to the Races with These Trendy Handbags

When I first moved back to London having left as a child and returning at the grand old age of 28, there was quite the learning curve to be had in terms of national events – I had no idea how beloved football was to us as a country, didn’t realise the extent of the festival culture and had never been to the horse races. Having taken a job at a progressive digital marketing company that loved to pander to its clients, showering them with posh nights out and special hospitality days at things like the F1 or the horse racing.

My first introduction to a beloved British tradition which is renowned for its (sometimes outlandish) fashion and an excuse to drink Pimm’s & lemonade and gamble (hopefully with someone else’s money).

So what will the posh attendees of this year’s Royal Ascot find themselves carefully treading on grassy terrain betrothed in? One thing I learned quickly was that sometimes the planning that goes into Royal Ascot outfits is a year long preparation given the time it takes to design & create the amazing headpieces from large, over-the-top sun hats with mammoth proportions to the daintiest of fascinators that do, indeed, fascinate. But it’s not just the hats that need to be carefully curated; it has long been tradition to make sure your entire wardrobe is fit for purpose from the dress to the hat to the all-important Royal Ascot handbag.

Well, this year we’ve seen the trend with mini bags continue vibrantly on the runways and we know there’s a sharp lean into the country-inspired theme thanks to the uber-popular release from Beyonce. As well there is a great floral vibe prominent in 2024 that is inspiring ladies to incorporate true spring tones into their fashion choices and we aren’t short on choice for the adoring audience to ogle our bags as well as our hats.

I’m so glad that the shift towards western fashion has finally materialised as this particular trend is so much fun and can be accessorised with flair. Crimson Handbag Collectables

My love of handbags didn’t come naturally, I wasn’t a girlie girl.  I went to a preparatory boarding school in New England and the only brands we revered were J.Crew and LL Bean.  I didn’t give a second thought to luxury brands, the internet had not been born into our day-to-day existence then.  And despite going to school with the likes of many Saudi princes & princesses, red-faced, dare I admit, Donald Trump’s nephew and, more intriguingly, Moses Farrow of Mia Farrow and Woody Allen notoriety, our value was not found in wearing name brand clothing and Gucci sunglasses before our 18th birthdays.

No, my love of handbags came later in life, along with lots of expendable income, no real responsibilities and in tandem with my immersion into the digital marketing landscape of mid-2000’s London.  To that end, I didn’t have enough fashion prowess to pull off anything too daring, I wouldn’t dream of outdoing my little black dress with a bold and beautiful red handbag back when my appreciation for all things brand-related and fashionable was really coming into its peak.

That’s why it’s with great glee that sitting here now, in my mid-forties, I am over the moon that the red handbag isn’t just making a resurgence into current trends (as if it ever went away), but it’s really establishing itself as the cornerstone of today’s female wardrobe.  Usually my taste lends itself to purple, but I can cheat, and with such a delicious array of colours & styles, the red handbag is doing to me exactly what it was designed to do – it’s catching my attention not just saying “look at me”, but more importantly, “BUY ME”!

From crimson to cardinal, velvet to blood, maroon to raspberry, the multitude of options when it comes to choosing the best fit red for you or your outfit are resplendent.  I see crossbody bags in shades of apple, clutches that come in piercing chili red and shoulder handbags gleaming from storefront display in the deepest and most rich ruby.  Match your nails, your bag and your jewellery and there’s no way anyone in the room will be able to take their eyes off you and YES! I’m ready to be that woman.

While my love affair with handbags was a little late to bloom, I’m struck by just how resonant and deep a chord the colour red strikes in handbag form – a myriad symbolic meanings, for me the colour represents confidence, sexiness and vitality.  Red is bold, it can be brash, it can be in your face and I aspire to be the woman confident enough to be strolling casually down Bond street sporting her Alexander McQueen Peak Mini Bag in Welsh Red, famously cutting edge design in full view, pretending to be contemplating life but secretly knowing that every woman who passes me is admiring the handbag covertly and wishing it was theirs.

I think about all the times I went unadorned, devoid of anything fashion-forward, to professional events, award shows and business dinners when the considered addition of a dynamic red handbag, perhaps the classic Gucci Horsebit quilted leather shoulder bag with its iconic hardware, would have really clinched the evening’s look.  Alas, my evenings are less filled with night time fancy as they are with country pubs these days, but that diversity encapsulates how the red handbag can span different lifestyles, different locations and, indeed, different times of your life.

In particular, the Gucci Horsebit really shines in its versatility – I would be just as comfortable wearing this piece as a crossbody bag to a ladies’ luncheon as I would using it to accessorise the next over-priced Michelin star meal I save myself for in the City.  Great with an ankle boot or high heels, the chunky hardware makes this handbag a real showstopper that can perform when required but suits a casual occasion just as well.  This is the kind of functionality and adaptability that really works for my life now, while letting people know that I’m still on trend.

You won’t be disappointed in this classic dual purpose Gucci Horsebit quilted leather shoulder bag both for value and for wearing options.  I was concerned that in choosing a red handbag I wouldn’t be able to use it except in more formal situations, but that’s simply not the case.  This particular piece has a really universal feel because it’s so elegant and can pair so well with day or evening wear.  Not too flashy, the chunky chain detailing and enlarged horsebit embellishment at the front make it easily interchangeable depending on the time of day or occasion; the size is just perfect for all my essentials, again, without suffering from bottomless pit syndrome and it offers a decent amount of storage space considering it’s such a compact size.

I couldn’t wait to take this bag on out on the town, this was pure excess and I loved it – living out a decades long fantasy, I was every inch that woman strolling down Bond Street without a care in the world, brandishing my McQueen Peak Mini in Welsh Red and exuding my own vibe of self-worth and confidence.  This bag doesn’t disappoint when it comes to McQueen’s famously cutting-edge style, it boasts handcrafted calfskin leather with a curve-shaped magnetic frame, juxtaposed with a soft body, while enabling you to interchange it as a crossbody or over shoulder bag.

One design aspect that really stands out and I absolutely die for is the unique finger hold handle that not only is great for keeping the bag safely in hand but is so reflective of McQueen’s inspirational and aspirational design techniques.  In particular, this bag was inspired by the sharp and structured shoulders of the tailoring silhouettes and that will keep me wearing red for years to come.

• Choose the right red for your skin tone
  True reds with blue undertones suit cooler skin tones, while warm reds look incredible against golden or olive complexions. Not sure? Go for a rich raspberry or berry tone, they flatter almost everyone.

• Let the bag do the talking

  Standard leather creams can alter or dull the colour. Stick to products specifically designed for dyed or coloured leather, and test a small patch before applying across the whole bag.

• Stuff your bag when not in use
  Prevent slouching or sagging by keeping its structure intact. Acid-free tissue paper works best, bonus points if you store it upright and zipped.

• Be careful with light clothing
  Red handbags, particularly patent or unfinished leather, can bleed onto pale fabrics. This is especially true in hot or damp weather, so avoid wearing against silk, linen or white denim unless you’re confident in the finish.

• Wipe regularly, but gently
  A soft microfibre cloth is your best friend. If you spot dirt or fingerprints, a light rub is usually all that’s needed. Never scrub.

• Suede requires special attention
  Use a suede brush to revive texture and remove marks. For stubborn stains, a white eraser can work wonders—but always test gently in a discreet spot.

• Rotate your bags
  Carrying the same red handbag daily? Gorgeous, but risky. Leather needs to breathe, so give it a rest between wears to prevent cracking, corner wear or permanent misshaping.

• Never skip the dust bag
  They’re not just for show. A dust bag protects your handbag from accidental scuffs, fading and airborne dust. It’s the easiest step to prolong your investment.

Top Luxury Sustainable Handbag Brands

Gone are the days when sustainability was merely a buzzword. Today, it’s a movement, a lifestyle and a commitment to preserving our planet for generations to come. And guess what? Fashion is no exception – far from it, in fact. As fashion influencers, we have witnessed first-hand the evolving landscape of the industry, where sustainability has taken centre stage, and for all the right reasons.

While here at Clutched our focus is on luxury brands, it can’t be denied that the creation of renewable materials for use in high end brands is solely important for the higher end of the global fashion world.  More and more, we see fast fashion is starting to take a back seat in the industry and how the luxury brands approach sustainability will no doubt forge the path for the rest of the trade to follow.

My Top Handbags Styles This Summer

The sun is a-shining and suddenly the birds are singing, there’s an extra pep in my step, I’m shaving my legs every morning now that the possibility of wearing a skirt is becoming real and I’m quickly filling the diary with all the long-anticipated spring and summer time activities I have waited so long for.  This winter has felt particularly painful – we’ve all said it – when is the rain ever going to end?  Now I’m not saying that we’ve got the keys to the summertime castle yet, but it is time to get that sun-kissed wardrobe ready and start ear-marking handbags for the plethora of brunches, picnics in the parks and pub lunches that are inevitably on the horizon.

There’s nothing like the feel of walking expediently through central London, hair slightly tousled and appearing to be on a mission like all the other over-busy businesswomen in the city. I liken tourists in London to pigeons, they seem to walk around in ever decreasing circles, from one side of the pavement to the other, purposely holding up my impressive stride and there’s nothing that irks me more than trying to pedestrian dodge while remaining focused on the important things in life: Whispering Angel and bottomless brunch.

My first brunch of the year was at the world-renowned Ned private members bar in Shoreditch.  Under their expert team, the Ned provides a high-end brunch with a high-end crowd, so my handbag choice for the day had to be in line with my surroundings and I was toying with two options.  The first was the Gucci Diana small shoulder bag in cream.

In terms of price, this bag is the epitome of having the luxury look without the luxury price tag – priced at only £60, this beautiful handbag is made from sustainable materials so you can feel good about getting a bargain as well as being environmentally friendly.

In the end, I decided to go with the Gucci – the Ned certainly warrants a bag of that prowess; however, the only issue I didn’t consider was my innate clumsiness and the resounding possibility that I’d come back with a smudge of maple syrup or drop of hollandaise sauce in an inconvenient place.  I wish I could say I walked away unscathed, alas, I did not, but the Gucci came back in pristine condition and that’s what counts.

One of my favourite London summertime activities is picnics in the park.  Whatever your local common ground – the vibes in the parks as the sun starts to perk up is undeniable and a fabulous place to meet up with friends and family for a slapdash charcuterie board and some sparkling rose served in a plastic cup.

There are a number of types of bags that fit the occasion, but the first that comes to mind is the all-important tote bag – with ample room to hold sandwiches, bottles of wine (ok maybe just one) and a good book or iPad, the tote is the go-to picnic in the park bag and the one I’ll be wearing to my first tree-lined picnic in the park will be the Kasbah Toile De Jouy floral-motif cotton tote by Sandro.

Another ideal bag that I fall back on for summertime events is the classic backpack.  If I’m perfectly honest, I use my backpacks more frequently than I do my handbags as I’m always on the go to a meeting and, frankly, needs must – in this case one must carry one’s MacBook with them.  But whether I’m heading to a meeting or heading to the common, I can always elevate my look with my trusty Prada Re-Nylon backpack.

While on the pricey side (£1,580), the re-nylon backpack comes in three colour choices (black, light blue and desert beige) and it’s a sturdy bag with plenty of storage space. Part of Prada‘s heritage since the ’80s, the nylon backpack reflects the main characteristics of the brand: innovative materials, a utilitarian approach to luxury and a reinterpretation of the classics. This modern accessory with a minimalist design is made of Re-Nylon, produced from recycled, purified plastic material collected in the ocean. It’s a great bag and will lift your outfit to the next level while continuing to be practical.

It’s fair to say that all backpacks are not made equal, and this is certainly the case for The Row’s Puffy medium leather backpack. While best not to be throwing this beautifully crafted piece around the common lawns, this backpack elevates backpacks with its soft calfskin leather craftsmanship on full show – I don’t know whether to stroke this bag or put my makeup in it.
